  144.         A.BACKGROUND
  145.              
  146.              4DOS provides a way of attaching descriptions to files
  147.         on your disk that is apparently seamless.  The descriptions
  148.         appear on directory displays and automatically are copied
  149.         when you COPY or MOVE a file to another disk or directory.
  150.  
  151.             But this seamless property fails as soon as you use other
  152.         programs on your files.  For example, if you archive the files
  153.         with the PKware programs PKZIP or PKUNZIP, the descriptions
  154.         stay behind.  4ZIP and 4UNZIP address this problem, providing
  155.         an automatic method to store descriptions in ZIPFiles and to
  156.         restore them when you extract a file.
  157.  
  158.             You must have copies of the PKware utilities located on the 
  159.         DOS Path, or in the current directory.  These shareware programs 
  160.         are not supplied with 4ZIP/4UNZIP.  You can obtain them from many
  161.         Shareware distributors, BBS's or from PKware directly at:

  170.         B. 4ZIP USAGE
  171.  
  172.              4ZIP Usage is:
  173.  
  174.   4ZIP ZIPFILE [/am?] [d:][path][filespec] [+filespec] [+..]
  175.  
  176.              A directory display similar to that of SELECT will appear
  177.         showing all of the files meeting any of the filespecs. This
  178.         use of include lists is identical to the 4DOS 3.0 DIR and
  179.         SELECT usage.  Note that only the first argument in an include 
  180.         list can have a pathname; subsequent arguments default to the 
  181.         same path.

  183.              You can mark files to be ZIPped into ZipFile in several
  184.         ways, similar to the 4DOS SELECT command, as follows:
  185.  
  186.                 <+>     MARK file
  187.                 <->     UNMARK file
  188.                 <space> Toggle MARK
  189.                 <*>     MARK all files
  190.

  193.              To move the selection bar around the list of files, use
  194.         the following keys:

  196.                 <UP>    Move up one line
  197.                 <DOWN>  Move down one line
  198.                 <PgUp>  Move up one full screen
  199.                 <PgDn>  Move down one full screen
  200.                 <HOME>  Move to top of list
  201.                 <END>   Move to end of list

  203.              When you are finished marking files, then:
  204.  
  205.                 <ENTER> ZIP marked files into ZIPFILE
  206.                 <Esc>   Quit 4ZIP without doing anything
  207.  
  208.              4ZIP also has two options, which can be used singly or
  209.         together, e.g., /a /m, or /am.
  210.  
  211.         /a  ZIP all files matching filespecs without query.
  212.  
  213.                 4ZIP Junk /a  C:\SOURCE\*.Pas + *MATH*.INC
  214.  
  215.             would ZIP into JUNK.ZIP all files from the C:\SOURCE 
  216.             directory that either had the extension PAS or the
  217.             extension INC and MATH anywhere in the filename.

  219.         /m  Move selected files from source directory to the ZIPFile.
  220.  
  221.             This works by deleting the files from the source
  222.             directory after ZIPping.

  225.         C. 4UNZIP USAGE
  226.  
  227.              4UNZIP Usage is:
  228.  
  229.   4UNZIP ZIPFILE [/adm?] [outpath] [d:][path][filespec] [+filespec] [+..]
  230.  
  231.              The display is identical to the 4ZIP display, showing
  232.         all the files in the ZipFile that meet any of the filespecs.
  233.         Marking of the files to be extracted and cursor movement
  234.         around the screen is identical to 4ZIP.
  235.  
  236.              4UNZIP has three options.  The first two are similar to 
  237.         the ones provided for 4ZIP.
  238.  
  239.         /a  UNZIP all files matching filespecs without query.        
  240.         /m  Move selected files from the ZIPFile to the outpath
  241.             directory (Current directory is default).
  242.  
  243.         /d  Delete selected files from the ZIPFile without extracting.
  244.  
  245.         This provides a convenient tool for ZipFile management,
  246.         allowing you to select files to be removed using any
  247.

  250.         combination of filespecs with wild cards and the SELECT screen.
  251.         The combination /ad will delete all the specified files
  252.         without presenting the SELECT screen.  The combination /md
  253.         is interpreted the same as /m alone.

  255.         Outpath, if supplied, determines the directory in which the
  256.         extracted files are to be placed.  So for example
  257.  
  258.                  4UNZIP C:\SOURCE\JUNK A:\ /am *.doc
  259.  
  260.         would extract all of the files with extension doc from the
  261.         file  C:\SOURCE\JUNK.ZIP and place them in the root directory
  262.         of the A: drive.  Then it would delete all of these files
  263.         from JUNK.ZIP.

  266.         C. REGARDING REGISTRATION
  267.  
  268.              4ZIP/4UNZIP is ShareWare. The law requires that if you use 
  269.         this program, you must register and obtain a license for it. The 
  270.         registration fee is $15.  A registration form is included at the 
  271.         end of this manual.

  273.              Registered users will be notified of upgrades to 4ZIP/4UNZIP as
  274.         they are released, and will receive the latest version of the
  275.         program.  Online help is available through CompuServe, by
  276.         EasyPlex.  Help is also available by mail. I will try to answer 
  277.         all letters within 48 hours. Non-registered users must include 
  278.         a SASE for a reply. The degree of help available to non-registered

  316.     4ZIP and 4UNZIP and could only run under 4DOS.

  319.     4ZIP and 4UNZIP now stand alone, and can be run under DOS.  4UNZIP
  320.     accesses the ZipFile Directory itself without using PKZIP -v. This is

  366.              Also take a look at 4EDIT, a full-screen editor for dir- 
  367.         ectory comments (or, in 4DOS terms, Descriptions). I think you 
  368.         will find it very useful.  Its good practice to comment your 
  369.         files, and often its handy to see the descriptions attached to 
  370.         other files, while you are writing a new one.
